Frankenstein Cliff

Oil on primed masonite

The Frankenstein Cliffs in Crawford Notch were not named after the fictional scientist, but after landscape painter Godfrey Frankenstein, who frequently painted the cliffs during his visits to the area in the mid-1800s. Known for his ambitious work, Godfrey created a massive 1,000-foot-long panorama of Niagara Falls, pieced together over 20 years. His friend, Dr. Samuel Bemis, who owned much of Crawford Notch, named the cliffs in his honor.

This painting was started on-site in Crawford Notch, NH, and then finished in the studio.
